CREAMER AND SUGAR SET WITH TRAY
The bowls begin as lumps of porcelain clay, carefully hand kneeded or "wedged" so that the moisture content is uniform throughout. Then each lump is shaped into a slab, smoothed over a form and allowed to firm up so that it can be inverted without distorting.  At this stage the  still soft piece is futher shaped by various hand methods.  It is then allowed to dry for several days.

A variety of patterns are then applied to the interior surfaces.  Porcelain slip with added tin to make it somehwat whiter than the porcelain body itself after firing is used to create the patterns. When the patterning is complete, each piece is further smoothed and then bisque fired. Following the bisque, the pieces are glazed with a very smooth white matt glaze which allows the pattern to show through. Some patterns are raised from the surface, so that when the light hits them, the pattern is emphasized.  The scale of the patterns inside the larger bowls contrast with the smaller patterns on the inner bowls.

Since I am pushing the clay to its limit in the final firing to 2,380 degrees, some pieces do not survive without distorting  badly.  These are destroyed . The successful pieces are  paired carefully into sets, so that the subtly curving rims create a pleasant  harmony.

SMALL HANDBUILT PITCHERS
These small handbuilt pitchers are made by  piercing  a small ball of porcelain clay with a wooden dowel and rolling and stretching the clay  into a progressively thinner cylinder .  After the basic shape is created, the cylinder can be pinched and darted to create a varety of organic shapes. The white matt glaze applied to the outside compliments the "soft" organic forms of the pieces.  These pitchers hold about 8-6 oz and make ideal serving containers for dressings and sauces.

Prices start at $85.00 and vary according to size.
