DESIGN IN PORCELAIN
THE NEIGHBORHOOD: The house is located in Holly Hill Farms Subdivision in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The location provides easy access to expressways and the entire metro area while still offering a quiet retreat of rolling terrain with woods and ponds. The opposite of "cookie cutter", each lot and home is unique in size, shape and style. A neighborhood association sees to snowplowing and other occasional maintenance and hosts a few social events each year. It's a delightful place to walk and bike during all seasons of the year.
LOT AND GARDEN: The house is positioned at the highest point of the lot which slopes down from the street to the back lot line offering a slightly elevated view of the back garden.
THE GARDEN blends a natural woodland with wildflowers, ground covers and ferns on one side, with a shade garden and a few more sunny beds. There are many varieties of hostas, ferns, azaleas, ornamental grasses, ground covers and ornamental trees like Japanese maples.
The deck outside the kitchen receives sun until early afternoon. Next to the deck and down a few stairs, the flagstone patio provides a shaded spot for breakfast.
The garden was designed to offer a view from every window and all the areas are linked by paths of fine crushed gravel. There is a sprinkling system for the beds and grass but it is seldom needed.
